  A grant outdoor boiler started cutting out, the burner went into 'lock out'. Called Alistair R Mowat Ltd and the following is what happened next and is taken from the bill. [My comments in brackets] 27-1-10 To check boiler and restart 1hr £40. Removed burner, checked and cleaned electrodes, cleaned photocell. Advised Mrs__ about a service [actually no, she called to get Mowat to come and service the boiler. After this visit it still repeatedly went into lock out] 8-2-10 to check boiler and remove faulty switch 1/2hr £20 Traced fault to switch, removed and made temporary connection [yes, by twisting together wires and covering with some PVC tape] ordered replacement. [Again, boiler still repeatedly went into lock out after this visit] 9-2-10 To service boiler and repair radiators which were not heating, reset programmer 3hrs £120 Cleaned out heat exchanger and burner, replaced nozzle, checked electrodes, oil pressure, flue temperature, carbon dioxide, efficiency and release radiator thermostat, reset programmer [Like the two switches inside the boiler that are used to isolate the burner and pump from the mains supply, the radiator in the hall also "suddenly" stopped heating the day after the above visit. As usual, the boiler still went into lock out frequently] 10-2-10 To checking boiler and removing other faulty switch 1/2hr £20. [The boiler was still going on lockout, despite apparently being serviced on 9-2-10, and now the 'faulty' switches being removed and the wires being twisted together] 16-3-10 To replacing switches and installing external fire valve 3hrs £120 Removed temporary connectors [yeah, PVC tape], fitted replacement switches, cut and altered oil pipe, installed fire valve, drilled boiler casing for sensor bleed and tested oil line. [Only after this last visit did the boiler stop going on lock out. From examining the schematic diagram of the boiler it is impossible to see any logical cause of %u2018lock out%u2019 relating to these two switches]. O/B nozzle, 2 switches, fire valve, pipe and fittings £78.11 Total bill £467.78 (inc VAT). Price for above work from other local heating engineers: average of £255.13 Conclusion: I would not recommend Alistair R Mowat Ltd to anybody.
